Out into the Night
The clatter of feet
Hard breathing exhaled
Down through the streets
A port village asleep
Yet seven souls run
And together as one
Leap astride their stallion
Shimmering orange in the night
Waiting for its heartbeat
Against the majesty and might
Of what lies ahead
Huge waters unleashed
Outside the restraining wall
Waiting to defy the calamitous call
Against the tick
Of a ceaseless clock
Our brave ones fly
To attend to those
Whose desperate cries
Heard over and over again
Out in the enveloping night
All are aboard
The deepening throb arises
Of twin engines eager
Breathing their powerful
Pulsating bass
The crescendo to come from
Concert and choir as yet unsung
But now in full voice
Alive to its mission
Across the calm of shelter
Past the last lights,
The warning bell
Out into the maelstrom
This is their remit
Their fruition of hell
This is no ordinary sea
They know that at once
Each and every one
feels the stab of fear
Playing to instil chill
But to these hardy boys
That play has been and done
How can they hold
Sway from the shelter
Away from safe shores
Into the hell afore them
Away from the warm grate
Lighting beautiful faces
Behind closed doors
It’s because we’re here
With a duty that’s profound
Inbred within us
A kinship centuries old
bred upon the seas
Brothers of a kind
Cemented and held dear
Now in the teeth
Of the ferocious gale
Horizontal shards of rain
Creating a blur sustained
Spumes of volumous spray
Add to the drama played
Atop mountainous seas unfurled
We see our baleful aim
A thirty foot gaff
Taking in water
Lying across a beam sea
A rudderless effigy
Beyond reasonable repair
Its crew’s dilemma laid bare
Lying low in the water
The angle fierce for a line
There has to be agility
The crew must rely
On the craft coming together
A once only time to sew
And make the remedy their own
A line across her bow
To bring forward her head
To set up a tow
By which she will be led
To the calmer waters
Of our sheltered cove
And salvation bestowed
Taking up the slack
They’re away from the night
The beam sea now forward
Just the waves to attack
The warning bell there
The first lights just passed
The shelter of home to grasp
Five hours in full
Is the time at sea
A mere spit in the ocean
For those that stand
At the threshold
Of the raging moving mass
That shows no respite or remorse
The firm tread of feet
Relaxed breath in cold air
Up through the streets
As the port village sleeps
Into the calm behind home’s door
The warm inviting sanctuary
for our heroes return
