The Majesty of the Sea
Beyond the horizons of human kind
Taxing the skills of the most gifted mind
The majesty of the sea knows no bounds,
its beauty unfurled to infinity
Mutating, compounding in its intricacy.
For those who choose to ride this ocean deep,
of ever changing, fickle, erratic moods that be
know the embryonic challenge they face.
At once, enveloping warmth of a friend at ease.
Next, the thunderous roar heralding a change in pace.
Ten miles from land or one thousand at sea
Together, we are all in the same boat, me and thee.
At the whim of the Northerlies, crashing forth and fraught.
Flying before the Westerlies in the south of this orb.
Whenever and wherever the sea, it matters naught.
As cross currents and towering waves subside,
weeks of becalmed is the next test to ride.
Most days, the wind to the fore – a friend to be sure.
Other days, riding a storm, pumping to secure.
But being hungdrawn becalmed is the worst to endure.
Imagine the seven seas that cover this globe.
These huge swathes of water, enough to engulf
the hardiest of hands, the largest of boats.
Seamanship is the game, respect is the aim.
To call them our friends, allow them their say.
Welcoming the fresh breeze at the hint of dawn.
Clouds scudding along as if acknowledging prayer
For miniscule beings facing each challenging layer.
Who have skills sanguine, with which they were born.
Where each band of weather is the questioning norm.
Torn between a beam and a following sea.
Bring boats to wind, bring them about.
Bring them to; remove failing doubt.
Strength sapping waves topping twenty feet high
Cannot disguise the challenge the next hours belie.
What about our heroes who face the might.
Bracing the volatile sea in all its majesty.
Dispatching themselves day and night.
Facing the maelstrom as dramas unfold,
Bestowing hard earned liberty to those fortuitous souls.
Mere ripples in a magnitude of uncontrollable force.
That is the crux of the matter for those to the fore.
Olympic calm must be the maxim to follow,
Keeping a clear head to mark each ‘morrow.
To rescue and resuscitate those in need, once more
Let us think about them, each and every one
Who defy those spontaneous elements, released undone.
Scant specs upon an ocean so vast.
Viewed from above, minute, vulnerable, exposed.
Driving forward, holding hard, the mettle they grasp.
How many souls have they saved on the day.
Hundreds, thousands, more, suffice to say.
Each life, a worthy reminder to their daily cause.
Each one saved is another soul paid.
Against the shear majesty of the restless sea.
Grant them safe passage each time they are called.
Return them safely and secure with their charges aboard.
And may prayers and callings forever protect them.
Free, against the satanic majesty that is the sea.
For this and more, we thank thee Lord. Amen.
